The fans don't run and the van is overheating. The fans run if I supply direct power to the harness connection at the left of the radiator. I know the relay is right there on the rail but I don't know how to test if it's working properly.

I think all the relays in that bank are the same and you could swap with one of the others to check it. (headlight relay) . You can see the pt# on the relays with magnifying glass.

To test the relay, you have to duplicate the conditions that make it work. A relay is used to handle more amps that a switch might not be able to handle, so there will 10-12 gauge posative wires running into and out of the relay. One will be hot and the other will go to the fan motor. check that you have voltage in to the relay first with a test lite. There will be a coolant temp sensor that will trip the relay when the coolant gets to hot and off when the temp. drops. This is usually done when the coolant sensor grounds out the wire that runs to the relay and goes nutrel when the coolant temp is below 200 degrees. this is roughly how the system works becuse with a/c the fan will alse kick on to cool the condenser but I hope that this helps

The relay is a black or blue solid state relay that was recalled around that model. Have the dealer run the Vin to see if yours has been recalled. It's hard to check it at the relay. I just check it at the fan module wire harness connection. Unplug the connector and jump the fan to the battery with two jumper wire. If it runs, it's got a bad relay or fuse. If it doesn't, than its got a bad fan motor. Remember, if you replace the relay yourself, it has to be grounded good.

WITH ENGINE ON, UNPLUG THE 2 WIRE COOLANT SENSOR (USUALLY 1 BLACK AND 1 YELLOW WIRE)AND THE FAN SHOULD COME ON, THE COMPUTER IS WHAT APPLIES A GROUND SIGNAL TO THE FAN RELAY. BY DISCONNECTING THE COMPUTER TEMPERATURE SENSOR IT WILL GO INTO DEFAULT MODE AND TURN THE FAN ON.IF THE FAN STILL DONT WORK IT COULD BE FAULTY RELAY OR POSSIBLY COMPUTER

YOU CANT REALLY JUST TEST IT LIKE A REGULAR RELAY BUT ALL YOU CAN DO IS RUN THE TESTS THAT ARE REQUIRED AND THIS WILL PINPOINT IF THE RELAY IS BAD.

HOWEVER THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES AND I HAVE REPLACED HUNDREDS OF THEM AND I BELIEVE THAT THEY GO OUT BECAUSE OF THEIR LOCATION, IT IS SO CLOSE TO WHERE IT GET SOAKED BY THE WATER ALL THE TIME.
