It might be a tad outside your 1 hour drive time, but there is a lovely little Inn on the water in St. Clair Michigan.
St. Clair is about 10 miles south of Port Huron and it sits directly on the water with every room facing the water. The place is an English Tudor inspired country manor looking place. I seem to remember that it was built by the St. Clair city fathers during the depression in order to bring tourists to the area. It's pretty fancy, and pretty romantic.
You can lay in big four posted bed, open the drapes and watch the freighters slide by on their way north or south. Pretty romantic.
Last time I was there the food was ok, not great; but I heard they've made some changes. Check on-line and you'll find
St. Clair is a neat little town and there are other Bed and Breakfasts in town.
have fun

Bill's suggestion of The St. Clair Inn is a good one. There's also The Thomas Edison Inn on the water in Port Huron. You could also rent a small cottage on the water in the small town of Lexington just north of PH.
All else fails go to Lover's Lane and shop for each other!

mackinaw, of course. Traverse City, tons of tourist stuff there during cherry festival and summer. Boyne City is great for skiiers in the winter. Leelanaw. Iron Mountain. Mount Pleasant (if you like Casinos, it's really nice). Boating on any lake shore (Lake Michigan sandier than Huron, but I like Huron's rocky coastline). Taquaminaw Falls (sp?). Rent a little cabin in the woods. Gaylord and Grayling are great for fishing/cabins/boating etc.
Lots of great places in the state. E-mail me with your ideal vacation (sporting, city, season etc) and I bet I can come up with something.

I personally like the drive-in in Burton which, as you probably know, is right by Flint, but I guess thats probably romantic to most people, or at least in the sense you mean it.

Schuler's Restaurant & Pub in Marshall, Michigan. Recommend it highly.
I also recomend the beach in Grand Haven. Nothing like watching the sunset, taking a blanket and....you know!

O.K. I was there on business and not for very long and I Love America, but when hubby and I crossed the bridge to Canada oh what a sight.... looking back at the American side across the water. Very romantic. Will be forever etched in my mind as my hubby doesn't have long to live unless a miracle is granted. "We Love America" and he served as a sniper in the USMC. Very Romantic...

Go somewhere up north. Either Traverse City, Mackinaw Island, or Petoskey. I recommend Petoskey, it's beautiful up there.
