Okay, the power index in this format:

x^n

Where x is the base, and n is the power or power index. The power tells you how many times you are multiplying that number against 1.

So:

x^1 = 1*x
x^2 = 1*x*x

So:

x^2*x = 1*(x*x)(x)

How many times are you multiplying x by itself now? 3. So, the power is now three:

(x)(x^2) = x^3

Generalized Power Rule:

n = some number, m = some number

(x^n)(x^m) = x^(n+m)
