An old movie betwn 80s-90s a kids dog ws killed by smthng tht came frm undrground he cvrd the hole w' planks?

There were little devil like creatures that came from the covered hole where the boy found his dog dead. It seems like every time he would check the hole it was get bigger and bigger. Eventually the boy felt obligated to find out what was down the hole that he covered with wood planks. I even remember him playing a record backwards which gave him additional information about what was going on. Please tell me the name of the movie so I can get it ! PLEASE! Thanx!
