Do you think that it should be classified as a disorder or is it simply a different set of personality traits? Is it ethical to treat it? What are your opinions regarding hyperfocus?

Sources or good site recommendations would be a plus :)

Thanks for answering!

I am not judging anyone or any child that has been diagnosed, but I think that doctors and medication makers try to come up with a diagnosis for anything that they don't think is "normal." Everyone is different. Some people are hyper, and some are layed back. Some pay attention, and some don't. If you ever get a chance read "A Brave new World". It's about scientist creating children who are all exactly alike and geniuses. What kind of world would there be if we were all the same like robots. Some teachers just use that as an excuse because they are too lazy to try a different way of teaching each child.

ADHD is a pattern of ongoing, long-standing ("chronic") behavior disorders that have three baic or core symptoms: hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.
Yes it is justified to catogorise it as a disorder and not different personality traits.
Already lot of moral damage has been done by labelling other disorders as different set of personality traits.
And any such disorder needs definite treatment. There is nothing etheical in treating this disorder.
There is a problem with the basic development of the child. No one expects much quiet activity, impulse control, or attention span from the average, normal 2-year-old. But by age 5 or 6, it is expected that the child shouls begin to regulate his activity level, control his behavior, and attend to tasks. The ADHD child has not achieved these capacities. And the degree to which each of these symptoms show themselves can vary greatly from child to child. These problems persist with the child and if not treated change the entire life both social and mental of that person. Such persons become then the freaks.

I don't know whether ADHD should be classified as a disorder or not.I do believe that those individuals who truly have it must feel that their life is in a constant state of confusion.I don't think most responsible parents will put their child on meds without exploring other options first. If you have examined diet, your child is active (in sports, dance, physical play, etc) and regular routine then it may be necessary to give the child meds. When a child says that "their brain is going too fast to concentrate" it may be time to explore themeds option. Can you imagine the frustration of a child who has difficulty trying to learn when he cannot concentrate or stay on task.It is easy for others to telll the child to take their time or pay attention but it does not work that way.The child wants to "be normal" but they cannot will the brain to just slow down. Can anyone, be it child or adult, learn when the mind is in chaos.Try reading and preparing income tax forms with loud music in the background and people talking. freating a distraction. If meds will permit your child to reach their fullest potential then why wouldn't you put a child on them.No one advocates overmedicating anyone for any reason.I think most people recognize their are a wide spectrum of learners in a classroom and we don't expect each child to be a clone of each other. We do expect to prepare our children so they will be able to lead successful and happy lives. Many people will say that meds are used by lazy parents.Meds are not a magical panacea but are an aid in helping the child gain some control over their life.

It's not a disorder. The healthcare industry has to make money. What better way to do this by classifying it as a disorder so they can perscribe you drugs and make them more money for the company.

Personally, i don't see it as a disorder at all. Its just someone's personality. It seems like you're trying to change the person by giving them medication
