I had intended it as an anagram (hence, choice D), as Hayden and another person suggested, but Rikki makes a really interesting argument I hadn't considered. Unless someone can rebut that today, I'm going with her answer because of the careful manner in which she lays out her reasoning. But even then D would still be right. Being a former college debater, I have to reward reasoning.

My vote would be A. sound.

Listening would be paying attention to the quality of sound (in this case, silence).

Hearing would indicate that you have perceived there IS a sound.

but listening=ears

i WOULD hav ethought hear is to sound..I don't feel the survey makes much sense though, sorry.

I don't think any of these choices make a good answer here. My choice for the answer is QUIET. In both cases you ear receives NOTHING.
