I've heard that people say that if your mom had her children premature you are more likely to have yours early. is this true?

is it the same for birth weight? does that mean our labor will be a like?

thank you!

Yes labors and pregnancy's do tend to have the same trends for mothers, daughters and sisters. During your prenatal visits one of the things they ask about are history of mom and sisters pregnancy and labors. This doesn't always happen but trends do show up. So be aware.

Not unless there was a structural defect that is genetically passed. So the answer is no.

There are some potential similarities. For instance, both my Mom and I have narrow hips. She was able to have 6 kids with no problem. I had a c-section for my first, but given that my ex-bf's mother also had c-sections when they were rarely done, it may just be big heads don't go through all that well. Don't know.

Longer gestations are often a genetic factor however. If your mother or grandmother were 10 month mamas, your chances are high that you will be as well. This is important to know because you can avoid a lot of early intervention.

Every person is different in pregnancy and NO pregancy is the same... lol my mom had me and Im the oldest of 2 and she labored and blinked and I was out... my first child I labored for 26 hours and then the kid finanly showed... oh yea to this day she is late to everything... lol My sister was born and mom pretty much dropped her right away... and with my second I labored for 12 hours and he finally showed. I was 8 lbs when I was born, my first was 6 lbs, my sister was 9 lbs and my second child was almost 11... lol Both my sister and I were righ on moms due date... My first came 1 week before and my second was almost 3 wks after. My cousin was a preemy baby ad her first child was 3 wks late showing up. So it really is diffeent every time.

There is a possibility that your labor will be similar to the labor experience of your mother.

The logic behind this, is that you may have inherited your mother's same body type.

It is very possible that your pelvis is built like your mother's. Some women have a pelvis that will spread and allow the baby to pass through a lot easier then other's.

Although, body structure is only one factor that determines how our bodies deal with labor.

Not necessarily, if it turns out that way it's just co-incidence.

Women can have 10 pregnancies and 10 different labours. They can have premmie babies and post term babies, big babies and small babies.

Labouring and birth isn't generally inherited, if you can understand that, because there are so many other factors that influence - the general health and fitness of the mother, nutrition, her age and the health of the baby will have much more of an influence than what happened with her mother.

However specific *secondary* medical conditions such as curvature of the spine or the size and shape of your pelvis that can be inherited from your mother may have an influence on your birth and delivery experience.

Oh god no. My labour and deliveries are the polar opposite to my mothers. Even my childrens birth weights arent even close. I was a 36 hr labour and born by emergency c-section weighing in at 9lbs 4oz and 10 days over due. My sister was a manditory c-section and 9lbs 3 oz and my brother was a c-section by choice weighing in at 8lbs 6 oz.

My first child was 3 weeks to the day early at 7lbs 1oz, my second was 4 weeks early at 6lbs 14 oz and my most recent was 2 weeks early at 6lbs 8oz. All drug free vaginal births i might add.

There may be some contributing factors when it comes to birthing or birth weight but as you can see by my example, sometimes who your mother is and what she went through has no bearing on your situation. Good Luck!!

Mine was nothing like my moms. She had an incompetent cervix. She said she had an hour after her water broke to get to the hospital. I was induced with all 3 children. And my labors took from 6 1/2 hours to 8 hours. They broke my water at the hospital.

No truth to that. Of my 6 kids, two were completely natural childbirth without difficult labor. It just depends on the circumstances. Birth weights vary alot too.The only thing about weight would be if your mom and you had diabetes because then you would both have really big babies.

My mother had very small babies. And mine have been small also, but both have weighed more than all four of hers.
Our actual labors are kinda similiar, for both of us ours were pretty short and easy. But now my sister on the other hand (same mom) had very long and hard labors with all 3 of her boys and her babies were bigger than mine and my moms.
So I guess ya never know.
