My friend got hacked on a game where someone hacked his password and I was wondering what type of software would do that?

If they are connecting to a multiplayer game where their IP address is seen by others then *game on*
Getting hacked into doesn't just happen. The person would have to have their computer in a vulnerable state.. such as not having the newest security patches installed and so an attacker takes advantage of this weakness and exploits it...
Or the "friend" gave the attacker access to their PC, like downloading a program that gave access, or simply allowing a share on their computer..
Once you have the IP of the computer you want to attack then you have to scan it for vulnerabilities.. this is no different than going to the symantec website and performing a security scan on your own computer... only instead of you using the results to patch your weaknesses the attacker will find tools to exploit these.

he as downloaded some software that as permitted someone to get on his computer, in other words is computer as not got a firewall on it, if it was hacked through the internet,

his password was probably too obvious, or he was scammed.
Or there might have been a Denial of service attack (look it up on wiki).
