I have peppermint and spearmint growing in a 16 x 16 inch container in my back yard. I just water it and give it fertilizer when I remember. It's practically a weed, so it's hard to kill. If you grow it in a garden it can be invasive so be careful what you wish for if you plant any. I grew mine from seeds I bought at the grocery store. I live in South Carolina and it has survived our winters here without any special care.

Peppermint is one of the many mints available on the market.
You can purchase the seed just about anywhere or seedling at your local garden centers in the spring. Peppermint, like any of the mints can grow 2-3ft tall and they also tend to grow out of control so I would suggest that you plant it in a large container rather than the ground. I made the mistake of growing it in the ground and now I mow over mint in one part of my yard instead of grass. It does smell good though when it gets mowed. They like well drained soil, but will tolerate most types. They are not fussy and require only the minimalist of care like sun and water from time to time. I don't even water mine unless we've had a bad dry spell.

You'd be amazed how many different mints are out there. I made it a quest one year to find all the mints I could and just in case you are interested, here are names of some of the others.

Spearmint
Chocolate mint
Pineapple mint
Apple mint
Orange mint
Banana mint
Ginger mint
Lime mint
Black peppermint
Grapefruit mint

Here is a site that has mints I've never heard of:

Sptfyr is amazing in her knowledge. *bowing to wisdom*

I have chocolate mint if you'd care for some.

do keep it containerized as it is a rampantly invasive plant, roots in water, surface roots on dirt, will go Everywhere if not controlled.
