How do we punish kids this young maybe community service every weekend for the next 5 yrs at a burns hospital they obviously have plenty of time on their hands.
I know how I would like to punish them but it is probably against their human rights.
Also do you think their parents should be made to pay the damage.

For the youths, I would make them attend burns units at hospitals and see what their actions cause. I would also make them do community service with the fire brigades, whether in the country or in the cities. Replanting trees as part of their 'Community Service' would also be good, and with the threat of "youth detention" if they fail to comply.
For the parents, I would make them pay for at least part of the cost of the damages and cost of putting out the fires.

Edited to say: I just read in the paper today that these kids were NOT throwing molotov cocktails. They were playing with a lighter and things went horribly wrong. Not saying they SHOULD have been playing with a lighter, but it's quite a difference between that and molotov cocktails. Wonder how such a 'mistake' could have been made ~ not some reporter looking for a sensational bushfire story, surely?

There was a programme being trialled some time ago where kids who started fires were sent to their local Fires Station after school and on weekends to do community service work, whatever the firefighters wanted them to do.

They were treated respectfully, but not friendly, they had to prove themselves, and come to understand and regret what they'd done.

The guy I heard interviewed about it said that each of the boys (it was all boys) who were trialled DID come to see the error of their ways.

Probably the firefighters are the best ones to teach them, because they KNOW, and if it is true (as I have heard) that is is majority boys who are firebugs, then it would be good if other men (like the firefighters) took them in hand.

Once they are a certain age, if boys start to go wrong, it's easiest for men to show them the right way, imo.

Cheers :-)

Hi, The Best thing they can do is boot these little Tykes into tomorrow. I was a cheeky kid but would never think to do what they have done. I received a good boot up the Bum from a Copper for something else, and have been on the straight and narrow since. It did me NO harm and set me on the right path in life. Social Engineers are worried about their jobs and are to blame. These people are Major RATBAGS. They should be Culled for the advancement of Humanity. The Parents should be made to take their Kids to the Police Station every Day to report. They will end up kicking their kids Bum and we will all be better off.

This is definitely a situation where the parents should be punished with the children. I believe a good not harsh punishment would be to have the parents pay for all damages caused by the kids on an equal basis. Even those present and not involved in the actual crime. The kids and parents should be jointly assigned to clean city roads or highways for 8 hours on each Saturday and Sunday for a period of one month.

Community service, but most hospitals especially burn units are not going to take people that young. Maybe at a park planting trees or something, there should definately be some punishment. These kids need to take responsibility for there actions.

A pillory seems like a good idea. A few hours being insulted by the population is a better idea than banging them up in some children's institution where all they'll learn is how to steal cars.

Put the parents in too. But about a block away.

I have a confession to make .. when I was about five ... I took myself for a walk where I used to live ( was in the middle of nowhere on grazing land .. that had been placed aside for the drovers at that time . .two houses were on the block) .....

My older brother used to take me for walks and in winter he would grab some sausages and he'd light a little fire and cook them while on our walks ...HOWEVER .. I took myself for a walk with a box of matches and in was in summer .. and I lit myself a little fire ....NOT realising what could have been serrious consequences....

It took dad, my brother, the man in the other house and his two sons to put the fire out .. and It scared the bloody living daylights out of me ... and I NEVER did anything like it again ....

THIS eleven year old NEEDS to have the bloody living daylights scared out of him too ... ( I'd be inclined to give him a swift kick up the bum while I am wearing my work issue steel capped boots.) because I DOUBT anything else would work ...

so How do we achieve that ... kinda hard .. I'd like to make him go with the CFA on a few Fire attendences ... BUT that MAY place his life at risk .. THEN again ... HE may LEARN .. .

and it depends on his parents .. as to whether or not I would make them pay .. some 11 yr olds are just little shytes and they can have great parents .. some parents are lousey parents and don;t teach their kids the right things .. so ... yeah I'd MAKE those kind pay.

You said it Molly, every single punishment would most probably be against their human rights.

Definitely community service for the kid and his parents. But it has to be a tough one, every time they see a burning item (match, candle, etc), they have to break out in sweat and remember their punishment.

11 year olds love to be out side so I would not allow them to go out of a juvenile detention center until they were 21, make them go to school until they were 21, however visiting burn units to see what fire does to people is not a bad idea. That would be their only out time. Yes, their parent should have to pay because they are their responsibility. I would pay for my kid's destruction.

This is very disturbing Molly.
A very good question.
I have spent many hours and days at our Adelaide Childrens Hospital Burns Unit after my daughter suffered burns to her foot last year.
She was one of the lucky ones, just watching her go throught the agony of having dead skin scraped off week after week was enough to bring us all to tears. Any feeling person that had to spend a day in the Childrens Burns Unit would come out of there a different person!
I think this would be a good idea for these young children to see the suffering that these children go through.
Maybe their parents should go with them to the hospital too.
This is something that is out of control and I would support anything that gets these kids to see sense!!
It is a very touchy subject in my family after having seen what one child went through with a relatively small burn compared to most children in the Unit. ♥
