A Mg atom is neutral so its numbers of protons and electrons are the same, ie 12. A magnesium atom has to release 2 electrons so that it can have a charge of 2+. Mg -2e = Mg2+. The Mg2+ ion has 2 electrons less. hence, the no. of electrons=12-2=10. remember this: all cations, like Mg2+ has more protons than electrons. For anions, like Cl- it's the other way round.

fact to remember: electrons have a negative charge.
Other fact to remember: ions form by losing or gaining electrons.
In order to get a positive charge, the atom must lose electrons, since electrons are negatively charged.
A negative charge comes from gaining electrons, of course.
So, a charge of +2 means you must have lost 2 electrons.
A neutral atom of magnesium has the same number of protons as electrons. So, a magnesium atom has 12 electrons.
The loss of 2 electrons to get the +2 charge means you now have 10 electrons in the ion.

1.) The charge of +2 means the Mg ion has two more protons than electrons. This means there are 10 electrons. 2.) If fluorine has a charge of (I assume positive) +1, then there is one more proton than electron. Since there are 9 protons, there msut be 8 electrons. 3.) Calcium's atomic number (how many protons it has in its nucleus) is 20, so an atom of calcium should have 20 electrons for a neutral charge. If the Ca atom loses two electrons, it gains a +2 charge.
