For some reason, we know more about celebrities, then we know about literature (People Mag does not count as reading literature) or abour ourselves. How many things do you know about Britney Spears? Michael Jackson? O.J. Simpson?
Now, how much do you know about Shakespeares works? Lyrics from a local band? Languages (Jibbrish and pig latin do not count!) (Pig latin is not latin either!)?? Just something i have been thinking about a lot recently.

People are fascinated with what they don't have. The world of the rich and famous is intriguing to many. They like to live vicariously through the celebs. As for OJ and Michael Jackson, people enjoy watching train wrecks. The media also likes to push all this stuff on us; however they say they are only providing the public with what they want. I do my best to ignore all that shallow nonsense. I don't read any celeb gossip magazines or blogs, and I don't watch VH1 or E! (celeb worship channels). It does get hard to block all that out when CNN and others have "Breaking News" any time Britney does something supposedly "earth shattering" such as shaving her head. I wish Americans would be smarter and focus on more pivotal matters than what Britney did or what Paris said.

I agree with another answer earlier, they don't rule the world. For some reason, we make them more important than they really are. Look at the people taking pictures all the time of the celebs, they feed our morbid curiosity, to see what the rich and famous live like. Well from recent news, it's not all that pretty is it? Seeing a 'star' in trouble makes people, who aren't interested in their everyday life, wake up and take notice and say AH HA! Thinking to ourselves that they got what they deserve...

If you think about it, it's our fault, not theirs. They more than likely would like a bit of privacy sometimes, but we watch the show, buy the magazines and tabloids, we pay the people who camp out with their cameras, it is us who give them the power.

It's because too many people are so lazy, so they let the celebrities sort of rule their world. I don't watch much t.v. apart from the news and cartoons and I don't even read 'zines, so I actually hardly know much about those celebrities. They all need to be slapped upside the head, along with the people who want to know everything about their lives or what have you. They're all idiots.

They don't rule my world, at least not the ilk of those you mentioned. They are tinsel celebrities. More substantial people who have earned celebrity because of good works have an influence on me. Britney Spears and Michael Jackson should not be lumped in with a brutal murderer, other than that, I get your point.

Do they?
They might have all the media attention, but that is all hype. People should stop buying the stupid "gossip" magazines and newspapers...
I personally don't care less about so called "celebrity's" two-minute wonders, the latest flash in the pan!

It seems like people "need" something to adore and worship... used to be religion and aristocracy. People had respect for Queen and country. That doesn't carry any weight any more... People used to respect each other more....

Actually, it seems to me, the media like to build someone up. The latest "wonder" JUST to knock them down five minutes later. They hype people up, build them up, specifically to cut them down to size. I think it makes "normal" people feel better about themselves to see these hyped up stars cut down to size.

Has Helen been watching too much of LOST? If her world is ruled by the others!!! Oh dear!

i am still on those studies-think i will never be able to complete such.
About celebrities who rule the world we have to apply deep thoughts to them -how they became so their brains ( natural and infused into their skulls,) the media , the all time creator ( sort of plastic surgeons)and the internet ( bogus and reliable) and your position as observer of all this. It's a real long exercise believe me.No that easy but the exercise is OK for the brains to work never mind the results of your search.

No-one rules the world. Why? Because there is no-one in the world. And there is no world as such. You are a victim of your own reading habits. Keep away from Hello! magazine.

Celebrities rule the world because we are dumb enough to let them. This is doomed to continue all the time we set more store by appearances rather than real personal qualities.
