RX7 is a good car.... if they have not been in storage for a long time. the apex seals tend to "dry up" when left unused for long period's of time...(months at a time) this is the #1 problem with this engine. Other concerns that you might run in to depends on where you live.. I.E. California or some other major city that has smog check. The rotary motor by nature does not burn clean. and they are $$$$$$ to overhaul to bring them back in to federal emissions requirements

It's obvious that your parents like you. DO NOT buy a "7" as a first car. It is extremely fast and corners great IF YOU HAVE THE EXPERIENCE TO HANDLE IT! It can kill a new driver very quickly. The rear wheel drive will work in snow if the driver knows how to use it properly, but the "7" sits low to the ground, which is a problem in deep snow. That is not taking into consideration the special requirements for maintaining a rotary engine in good condition. It is NOT a start up and go car. Buy a Honda or Toyota, etc. for that. A "7" needs to be run hard to last and that is the last thing anyone should tell a new driver to do. Baby a rotary and it will die a quick and expensive death. My recommendations for a new driver are to buy a cheap "knock about" for a first car. Something with low power and great crash survival abilities. Not a performance vehicle. Get a few years and some formal sportscar handling training behind you before you think about a "7". Your local Sports Car Club of America people will be more than happy to introduce you to the world of performance driving. They often run seminars and courses during the racing season. Look them up on line with a search for SCCA, Omaha.

The rotary engine is a very good design with great power to weight ratio. The problem is with the apex seals -- despite decades of engineering no solution to worn seals is in sight, and when compression drops the engine becomes useless. Although the engine only has three moving parts it is a MAJOR operation to overhaul and only a seasoned rotary mechanic should undertake it. If your pontential RX7 has been well maintained and compression is still good on both cylinders then you should have thousands of trouble-free (but gas-guzzling) miles of pleasure.

No one mentioned the problems they had with the Turbo. The engines themselves were usually good for 100 to 125,000 miles, but they had problems with both the turbo and the exhaust manifold cracking. Both are expensive fixes. Think there was a factory bulletin on this problem.

The Rotary engine is the major problem because of reliabilty problems, emissions and heavy fuel consumption.

Take it to a Mazda dealer and have them do a pressure check to see if seals are bad it will be money well spent as everyone says the are expensive to fix .I have a 88 conv.
