I waited a few minutes and it started again. I stopped mowing and just drove it back. What do you think it was? I check the oil and added a little because it was at the add mark. I checked the filter and added gas before I started mowing. It was still running but I always have problems when I mow. Any suggestions?

It was coming from underneath. It looked like the tires were smoking. I assumed it was coming from the engine area.

This sounds like your belt needs to be adjusted, or replaced, but make sure there's nothing wrapped around the blades binding them and not allowing them to spin freely.

Where was the smoke coming from? Engine area? exhaust? or from underneath it?

That is what I thought. You probably ran over some wire or twine possibly. Happens or Long grass can sometimes wrap around the blades. Sounds like you are burning up your belt for the mower deck.

Check underneath the deck by driving the front wheels onto ramps and block the rear wheels. I have had things wrapped so tight in there that I had to use a razor knife and pliers to pull it all out.

This could have bogged your engine down to quitting. You may be damaging the drive on the deck by friction over heat.

You will probably need a new belt if this is the case, probably a little tore up.

The reason I suspected this is because you said, "It started back up, you drove it back, and you have problems when you mow."

I don't know if you have this problem, but my mower would smoke and smell like burning rubber. I had recently added a mulching blade to the mower (it originally had a bagger) so that I wouldn't have to stop to empty it. I added the attachment to cover the grass clipping chute hole (like the manual said). The problem lay in the fact that I have very thick St. Augustine grass and the mower would mulch the grass up into tiny pieces, but the thickness of the grass prevented it from escaping under the deck. The deck would eventually fill up with clippings to the point that the blade couldn't spin any more and the rubber belt would spin around, getting hotter and hotter and making my mower smoke like crazy. I eventually took the chute cover off and I haven't had a problem since. If this sounds like your problem then give it a shot.

As suggested, it sounds like you ran over something that got caught in one of the drivebelts or made the deck 'seize' ( as in something is wrapped around the blades) .
Before using again, i would suggest safely jacking the tractor up and inspecting underneathin the front area- the drive belts, deck and underneath the deck .
Hevay smoking can occour when a belt is rubbing on something at normal speed ( which is fast) and can actually burn the belt .

It sounds like you have something going on with the mower deck or drive belt. I would remove the mower deck and make sure that all the pullys and blades spin freely wtihout making a lot of noise. There may be something binding the blades and it could be as simple as too much grass/debris under the deck or it could be one or more of the blade spindles binding.

Better plan on buying a new mower! This one is done for! If you can limp it by and finsih out this season, but typically smoke is due to burning oil. If this is the case, I'd say the the piston rings are shot, the block may be cracked, if its a 4-stroke may have blown a rod. In short, its terminal. Sorry to say.
