I am a member of a newly organized Veteran's Society at a University. We are trying to plan an event for Veteran's Day 2007. We do not have University funding at the moment. Are there any suggestions as to what we could do to celebrate Veteran's Day and spread the word about our organization (we are all college students who have at one time or are currently serving in the military)?

Look at the Service Organizations for Ideas .. the VFW, DAV, whatever .. as long as you ASK and find out what projects they need help with .. and if they need some extra hands when they go do their outreach efforts on behalf of the VA.

GO ask about putting flags on the gravesites (or cleaning up the gravesites) of our Honorable Military Dead .. pray around the flagpole. HONOR the commitment by organizing care packages for those deployed (Again, in conjunction with service organizations -- who will help gain the support of businesses in the community -- your organization could be the "manpower" that collects, packages, and gets the packages to where they will be mailed out).

Finally .. put together a 'information event' that has the SERVICE memories (like uniforms, pictures, thoughts, etc) of ALL of you who have served .. and set it out in a display in the college mall area (where students gather). MAN The booth .. and yes, SHARE your military experiences with your fellow students. GIVE the students the experiences .. Let them KNOW that we are HONORABLE, NOT Murderers, but PEOPLE .. Committed to the Defense of the Constitution of the US and CARING as well. We NEED to be the balance that provides the TRUTH of our service out there .. and to dispel the 'myths' that are perpetuated by those who have NOT served.

Veterans Day, previously Armistice Day, is an annual United States vacation honoring navy veterans. It is a federal vacation that's found on November 11. It coincides with different vacations reminiscent of Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, that are celebrated in different elements of the sector and likewise mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I have been officially ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.) The vacation is most commonly published as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and ads. While those spellings are grammatically appropriate, the United States govt has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) as an alternative than the possessive case is the legitimate spelling.[1]

You served to protect our homeland. You all still serve to do the same. Home. Our home. Comfort and family and all good things that the word home should imply. Get together, and consider building a home for a homeless family. Build it in the name of a local veteran who died serving his/ her country.
A legacy of life and giving that would honor the service for all those who will live in that home for as long as it stands. You could erect a small plaque and embed it on or into the home as a remembrance and historical marker that the new homeowner would be proud to show off.
