With an imbalanced schedule, it's tough to tell the exact strengths of teams. Sure the AFC is better now, but the NFC has been better in the past. It goes in cycles. I don't have any problem with leaving it as it is.

Cardinals went 9-7 when they went to the superbowl, that's not a terrible record. But truly, if there does end up being a 7-9 winner in the NFC West when there's 10-6 teams in the NFC that miss the playoffs, you know you have a messed up system. So far 8-8 has been the lowest record of a division winner, and there's a good chance either the Seahawks or Rams could match that or even do worse.

The current system allows a certain amount of parity. To seed teams by record would virtually eliminate the NFC from contention in this decade. That might be ok to someone who likes a certain AFC team. But the system is set up in a way that will allow any team to compete at any time. Consider this, under your proposed system, fans would potentially be exposed to several consecutive years of Steelers/Patriots or Colts/Patriots or Colts/Steelers etc. That may be great for their fanbase, but what about the rest of the country? I for one would not watch a superbowl containing 2 of the aforementioned teams and I'm sure many would share my opinion as such. The thing that gets overlooked in these types of discussions is that the NFL is not just about winning and losing. It's very much a business and making money is, love it or hate it, part of the game.

not like you mention it...having 2 distinct conferences is what makes a championship a championship. Having two teams possibly pl;ay from the same conference already happens....it is called the conference championship. And while one or the other does tend to dominate..it ain't perfect..*** Tampa proved a few years back, and Carolina playe one heck of a game against the Pats.
The part i think needs changing is the division champ...and therefore the playoffs. The Division champ should be whoever has the best record in the division (for instance....Seattle was NFC west champ last season...after losing 3 pr 4? games in their division. They proved they were the best intheir division, how? by losing to the rest?)...like i said...thats broken.
Non division schedule should be only for the 2 wildcards...and for tie breakers in division.

Yes, but not necessarily the way you mentioned. I like the two conferences but I don't like that only six teams make it to the playoffs. I think there should be two play-in games between the wild cards to see who gets to play the division winners who didn't get a first round bye
so seeds 1 and 2 get a bye, 3 awaits the winner of 6 and 7 and 4 awaits the winner of 5 and 8
though now that i think of it that would give 1 and 2 too much time off

i really dont see any problem with the way it is now....its pretty balanced...and the NFC ruled for a decade, and the AFC will do the same, then it will go back to the NFC....its all one big circle which makes the competition

It is fine the way it is.
As long as it doesn't end up like basketball or hockey where everybody makes the playoffs except for two teams who just barely missed getting in.

Forgive me sir, but to me, the NFL isn't a business. It's an organization of people who represent the finest aspects of our nation. We have many traditions. In my career, I have encountered most of them. Some are good, some not so good. I would, however not be here today were it not for our greatest tradition of all. Honor, Sir.
