Well, I know you don't want this answer but no. The reasons are many but all wifi (read that affordable wireless) is LINE OF SITE, and generally at 40-50 miles there will be something between you and your friend to block the signal. Hills, trees, buildings all interfere with the inexpensive wifi available to the normal household.

Now if you live in the Texas Plains or California Dessert, where the highest obstacle is a 5 foot Mesquite tree you might be able to but if and only if you have some high gain antennas and good transmitters. Or if you live on top of the mountain and your friend is low in the valley and you can SEE his roof top.

Other than that the price needed to accomplish this would keep you from doing it. The telephone company uses microwaves at these distances, but then they have a ton of money and reasons to do it.

Wish there was a better answer for you but there simply isn't unless the terrain permits a very clean line of sight to your friends house and you have an extra $500-800 for the equipment. (thats for high powered wifi, not commercial gear).

You would have to supply your own signal booster, but that can cause problems with the FCC.

if you had his IP address, you can usually connect strait to his computer and play that way with your own internet connection.
