If people get offended by this, then they are obviously oversensitive weakminded individuals. I know tons of Filipino nurses, but no Filipino doctors. The doctor in question was white and American's don't like their doctors to be trained in 3rd world countries. I didn't realize Filipino's were so weak minded to let a soap opera bother them...feel sorry for them.

Such a remark on a television, by a noble actress in a top rating show viewed worldwide? That makes it different. The audience is a collective of numerous nationalities. Do you think Filipinos can just laugh at it? No! No! No! It's not a wake up call for the Filipinos, but a wake up call to the world that Racism do exist in this modern times.
"...some med school in the Philippines..." Of all countries, of all people, how could they just look at us that kind of lowliness.
Anyway, God created Filipinos. there is nothing to be ashamed of.

yeah I heard about it. it was her line in the show. the doctor(white guy) said " you might be hitting menopause"
Teri Hatchers character susan said " Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines."
That line was harsh but thats the thing. . . it was her line. Shes an actress that has to fill her contractual agreements. if you wanna get mad at someone, get mad at the writer. Teri Hatcher should only be stoned if she says she doesn't feel bad about having to say that line. you know what I mean?
and from what I understand they have apologized. The only thing is is that it was only a 1 paragraph apology.
Me personaly, it's good that they realize that what they said was wrong but one paragraph is not gonna make 30,000 offended petition signers happy

In reply to Jayna's answer ... I think that comments like these do not help in giving respect to the Filipino community. If the "slur" pertain to other race such as blacks or jews then the "slur" would have garnered media attention but since it's about "Philippines" ABC just doesn't put enough attention to it. I bet they thought the comment was funny. Racist but funny. By the way the "slur" was, "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines".

Unless she has some defect that prevents her from understanding the words that are coming out of her mouth, then yes, Hatcher was racist in agreeing to say that line.
It's not a joke to make fun of Filipino doctors. You're destroying their credibility and their livelihood. Just because we are a third world country, it doesn't necessarily follow that we have substandard schools. Your schools are only ranked higher than ours because of their equipment, ie because they have more money.
The Medical industry in America is propped up by Filipinos. I dare you to show me onehospital who does not have a Filipino medical practitioner.
It's also unfair to generalize based on a couple of new, untested medical schools such as AMA and STI. We have a history of renowned doctors, and a wealth of good schools. A Filipino, Dr. Aguilar, discovered the antibiotic called Erythromycin. This is used by people who are allergic to pennicilin. In 1966, Dr Del Mundo won the Elizabeth Blackwell award for her service to mankind. Why? Because she invented the improved incubator and a jaundice relieving device.
Fast forward to THIS VERY YEAR and the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION gave the Sasakawa award to Dr. Jose Socrates of the Philippines. The WHO Sasakawa Health Prize recognizes individuals and organizations who are making contributions to the health and primary healthcare of people around the world. Though the prize money is given by a Japanese foundation, no individual or organization from Japan has even won the prize.
These are just the Filipinos who are Filipino in race and citizenship. Filipino migrants who have come to America have gone far. Heck, Former President BILL CLINTON's personal physician was a Filipina immigrant- Eleanor Mariano. She was also the first woman, of whatever race, to be head of the White House's medical unit.
This racist comment made fun of the abilities of Filipinos and the reputation of our Medical Practitioners. When you damage their reputation, you damage the livelihoods of so many hardworking, intelligent people. Hatcher would only be so lucky as to be treated by a Filipino doctor or cared for by a Filipino nurse.

Im a Filipino and I was not insulted because its really true. Its a sad reality that our government must take a serious look rather than condemning Teri Hatcher. That statement of her should serve as an eye-opener for the government/schools to improve the quality of education in the Philippines. The result of recent medical board exams shows how many aspires to become doctors/nurses/therapists but only few are qualified. Can you imagine computer schools like AMA and STI offerring medical courses? Only in the Philippines.
Not only that, isnt it that we Filipinos also make fun of Japanese for being 'Sakang', Africans for being "Unggoy". Indians for being "mabaho" and Chinese for "eating Cat" and "source of piracy in the whole world". We love watching our local comedians maligns these people in our movies and TV shows.
We love insulting other nationalities and yet we react so much in a simple statement.

Filipino nurses have to pass 4 different exams aside from the US Licensure Exam. So if you are an Filipino MD in the US, you must a big time. Just imagine how many competency exams and clinicals you have to go thru before you can get your US license. So I salute to those Filipino Doctors who practice here in the US.I look up to them.Remarks like these are unfair. The writers should do their research.

Im a doctor in Davao City. I made a great software that will eventually computerize the unreadable prescriptions of doctors. Americans havent perfected theirs yet but I do believe I got it! All my prescriptions now are computerized. I was even invited at UP-PGH last Sept 28 to talk about it. I am aiming to make the Philippines the first to eradicate illegible handwritten Rx way ahead of America. Lets see what Hatcher will say once this happens. Check my website is www.databasefordoctors.com . I wasn't mad of what she said but surely it got me even more DESPERATE to succeed. I need your help to make this happen. Rather than getting angry lets work on something great and lets prove them wrong.

stupidity is not an excuse, reported viewers of the show amounting to at least 120 m across five continents. we might not care if it is not a well to do show but as Terrie hatcher being one of the main cast and knowing the volume of viewers, she might be somewhat a bit conscious with what script to say, i believe (i hope so) that she could be more interactive with the show's scriptwriter since she knew she is not acting on a viewer less network, though she didn't write the scripts herself, she should be responsible enough on saying things (scripted or not) against anyone. with her show Desperate Housewives, with the wide base of viewers across the globe, she became an impromptu Ambassador that what she says is part of a protocol of nations and being what had said is regarded as important. She must be wittingly uttered things not to detriment of anyone.
