I noticed while watching the Red Sox-Angels game tonight that shortstop Orlando Cabrera's batting helmet is black. It almost looks like it's been burned. What's up with that?

While it IS pine tar, you people have it backwards.

The guys don't put the pine tar on their helmets so they can touch it and get it on their gloves, it's the direct opposite.

It just builds up from touching their helmets after applying it in the on deck circle. They apply it fresh before each at bat, so it makes no sense that they'd also need to get it from the helmets during the at bats.

filled with pinetar. he puts it on his bat then touches his helmet. Also, he puts the pinetar on his helmet so he just touches his helmet and his hands are now sticky!
