We must be clear on the distinction between "a sound" and "a noise".
Q: "If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
A: No. The tree does not make a sound...it makes a noise.
Webster's dictionary defines "sound" as: "the sensation perceived by the sense of hearing".
The ears detect acoustical noise, which is interpreted by the brain as sound.
Break the glass where nothing can hear the noise.

Two ways my friend.
1.) In a vacuum. There are no molecules in a vacuum and thus no sound.
2.) HF acid. Dissolves the silicate structure at the atomic level. Will actually eat the glass away where it is applied but without sound.
That being said, considering it is coming from an English teacher it's probably a trick question and not actually science related.

It's basically impossible in the real world, but in the theoretical world it could happen.
In the real world, contact causes sound, no matter how slight the sound may be. So throwing it (or anything at it) or hitting it or anything will make a sound when it breaks.
I think your teacher maybe thinking of heating up the glass to very hot temperatures and just putting it into water. The glass would crack (and makes a very slight sound) and will break.
I hope that's it, go get that EC :P!

There's a slight chance that it might not make any noise if you were to wrap the glass in a towel or cloth, then strike it. You could also warm the glass then pour cold water on it....the only sound might be from the glass falling. One more idea, you could break the object under water maybe....it might not make a sound.

previous burglars trick. Take Duct tape, and cover the pane of glass. conceal all the glass. Then provide it a solid faucet with some thing. do not hit too not elementary, you merely % to paintings on breaking the glass. save going till all the glass is broken, then you definately can get rid of it from the window pane.

Tape all the glass with clear box tape or most strong adhesive type tape. Tape the whole surface. You can break it without it making very much noise.

No sound at all is unlikely. Underwater would be muffled, though.
