It varies from state to state and from county to county. Also, there are no uniform fee schedules for lawyers.

Varies from state to state. You can go under $1000 and under $500 in a lot of states if you have the following conditions:

1. Short marriage (no pensions to fight over)
2. No Kids (Kids cost. Period)
3. No real property. Houses/Condos involve costs.
4. Both want the divorce and will work it out in settlement and not litigation. Judges LOVE it when the parties agree and he/she does not have to decide for the two.

In some states, you can do this pro-se (no lawyer) by just filling out the proper forms. I believe FL and Washington are good examples of this. FL even provides the forms on some websites.

Be warey of commercial websites offering to do this for you. A lot of people have figured out how to make money off of pro se divorces that you don't need if you take your time figuring it all out.

Call around and ask how much different lawyers charge for an uncontested divorce. The filing fee would be the same as if it were contested but the fees vary from county to county.

Edit: Sorry I didn't read your question properly the first time around. If you are fighting over property, it will be considered a contested divorce and lawyers will charge you a regular retainer and if you go beyond that and don't settle your property dispute, they will charge you hourly until you either settle or fire him.

Different states have different rules and procedures about how exactly to do the kind of simple divorce you're thinking of, but it's pretty simple and straight-forward. The only required cost is the filing from the court for the divorce decree or order. Check out nolo.com for more useful DIY legal advice.
