What makes them stand out compared to other progressive bands? Why just them and no other progressive acts get radio play?

There's more to it...most of their songs on around 5-7 minutes long, yet still gets mass airplay here...Sober, Schism, Vicarious, and The Pot are the best examples.

I get the feeling you already know the answer to this. Why does radio have limited play-lists in general? I dunno, maybe because they are owned by mega-corporations who are only concerned about what their advertisers think. Short, poppy emo seems like the current flavor. However, it goes deeper than that. How many modern progressive bands can you name? Of those, how many deserve airplay? Certainly more than just Tool, but admittedly there aren't that many prog metal bands. Until the masses decide to tune out and go with satellite radio (which plays several of those other acts), there is no reason for Clear Channel to change.

I don't know, but for a brief moment a few years ago, the Mars Volta got some radio play.
I persoanlly think there are better modern prog bands than Tool, but I guess their music is easier to listen to and are more radio friendly than say, Porcupine Tree. Their songs are relatively short which is an important factor in getting radio play.

The radio pretty much plays whatever is popular. Somehow, Tool became more popular than other progressive rock/metal acts and ultimately became a mainstream band (not that this is bad). They are also seen, in some ways, as alternative metal, which, along with alternative rock, dominate the radio.

i've never heard them on the radio.
the radio will play what sells. modern progressive doesn't sell to the majority of radio listeners. why? because most progressive bands focus on the album, rather than just singles. to them, it's more important to have a good album (which i totally agree with) but the radio thrives on short, simple songs with little to no interpretation required. or, the exact opposite of most progressive music.

to them
short songs=molto $$$

Well to me, I always hear them on the radio. I think they are a great band, I think what makes them stand out is because of the lyrics they make and their videos, which by the way are interesting. If you try looking for them on Itunes, they don't have their songs on there. and on their myspace also, they just have a couple of pictures but no songs. I tihnk their like Pearl Jam, they just love music...

At least half of what is wrong with the radio can be explained with one word: payola.

Yes, it still exists.
