Any irrational number will not be whole.

Rational numbers on the other hand that are not whole numbers are fractions, such as 1/3 5/10 etc.

pi is an irrational number, there is no pattern for the values of the decimal places: i.e. 3.14159..... compared with a rational number: 1/9 = 0.111111.....
