You can be an expert at anything if you really wanted to. Of course formal training/education is good for you and will give you credentials such as diplomas and certificates to prove that you are knowledgeable in that field.
From my experience, I only learned 20% of what I was supposed to know in school. The 80% was from experimentation, trial and error and self study. If you really are interested you can research online on the branch of IT you want to specialize in. Start practicing on your own. Self taught programmers and graphic artists know more than schooled IT professionals, because they are used to hands on application and have learned from their mistakes. Its all about willingness to learn. Your teacher can only teach you the basics, its up to you to follow up and keep on practicing.
What branch of IT do you want to specialize in? IT is always moving forward so you should always be up to date in the current trends and technology.
Start reading up on the history of computers, basic computer parts and their functions if you want to be in the hardware business. You can download Flash and Photoshop if you are into graphics and go to tutorialized.com for tutorials on this as well as some programming languages. If you want to be a programmer or into software development, study the System Development Life Cycle, as it wil help you a lot. Also familarize yourself with syntax and logic used for programming. Get dreamweaver and take up HTML/CSS as the basic steps for web development, eventually you can go into javascript, PERL, ASP and PHP. If you want to take up database management you can try checking out Microsoft access as basics and then you can try Oracle, My SQL etc...
Don't be afraid to experiment. You will learn more from your mistakes.
Hope I helped....

Go and find a very good school who have a nice standard teaching. Get a diploma and make sure to passed the board exams. After schooling find a nice and high standard company who creates or manufactured excellent/robotics products. And of course, you should always be updated and adapt new technology because what we learn in school may become obsolete.
So being an expert don't stop on what you've learned, it's a continuous cycle of knowledge to learn new things over and over again.

first find a language which you want to focus on like java or .net then read up or take courses on it. then do some projects or work on a company that will enable you to make use of what you know but at the same time making sure you are updated with the latest updates. it's IT so every 3 months or so a new update comes out. always try to challenge yourself, the harder it is to do then the better for you because if you are able to accomplish it then you would have learned a lot

It doesn't really matter how much one knows. It is how they apply their knowledge to good things that will make a difference so that the world becomes a better place to live. Using that knowledge to curtail other people's human rights to privacy is another thing.
I have seen enough, and I am not yet to give full respect.
