They had the audience seated in chairs on the stage around the characters who were all sitting at a long table throughout the play...is that unsual or is it just a way for the audience to have a better feel of the play?

IMO, this is a great way to stage this play. Considering the fact that you are basically watching 12 jurors in a closed-in space for the whole show, the audience member becomes like "a fly on the wall". You get that perspective of the characters being surrounded by walls, enclosed in this space, and the conflict inside. If I were in the audience, I'd definitely get a better feel for the play from this setup. Kudos to them!

It is both. I think that's a fairly creative way of presenting 12 Angry Men.

it is for the last reason, to involve the audience more in the play.

I have seen some crazy plays, people in costumes but no props acting out stuff, and sound guys adding sound effects to it.
