A scientific experiment is a process to lend support to, or disprove a thought or a hypothesis. Statistical experiments answer questions that may help in those scientific experiments.

In its simplest form the experiment is used by a scientist to gain knowledge.

Experiments are designed to test a hypothesis (i.e this drug will reduce cholesterol levels, kill cancer cells...).
Some people include observational studies under the term experiment. These are studies that try to answer questions without a hypothesis (i.e. what happens if ... or what temperaute will X melt ...)
