The two organelles bounded by two membranes are the mitochondrion and the chloroplast. Both of them have their own outer and inner membranes which function for protection. According to the evidences of the endosymbiotic theory, mitochondrion and chloroplast existed before as a unicellular prokaryote. In addition, the both of them had already built up their own membranes, contained their own protein synthesizing machineries, and had their own chromosomes which were circular in form unlike to the chromosomes of the eukaryotes which are linear and in a specialized helical structure.

the nucleus and mitochondria has a double membrane but cholorplasts DO NOT. chloroplasts are the only organelle that has a triple membrane system, the external and internal membranes and the granum (the pancake-like stacks of thylakoids).
