They are so disgustingly rich that they can employ legions of the top spin doctors.

Despite the controversies and scandals that have dogged them of late, I believe that the English Royal Family is still popular because they are a part of English tradition and have often provided stability and reassurance in times of crises.

During World War II, the then Queen Elizabeth (now known as the Queen Mother) was a source of strength for the nation. The current Queen Elizabeth II joined the women's auxiliary and drove trucks.

Even today despite the odd grumble, the English people overall still like the idea of the Queen being there. It is part of the same tradition that gives voice to the crowd at a football match singing 'God save the Queen' or at the Last night of the Proms signing 'Rule Britannia'.

It's their job to help charities in the United Kingdom, not around the world. It's become common for the younger royals to take gap years and help people elsewhere but the royals mainly attend chartiy events in the UK. They help Britain economically too - the Queen brings in a huge amount of revenue in tourism by opening her palaces to the public so people feel compelled to come from abroad which also brings money in through hotels, flights etc. They are popular because they aren't involved with politics or running the country. The Queen's main job is 'defender of the faith' which isn't too controversial.

Because they are fun. I think the Queen has a wicked sense of humour. I've met Prince Philip and despite being a bit 'Victorian' and standoffish - his a neat guy. Charles has his heart in the right place despite all that about Dianna. Anne is great and the Princes are just the most human guys iv ever met

They are not all that popular - tolerated is a better characterization. You might as well ask how can GWB still enjoy 27% approval despite 7 years of lies, war and blunders. There is just a certain percentage of people who support a leader no matter how incompetent they are or how vigorously that leader works against the interests of the very people who support him (or her).
