1.Squirrels abound on campus and off. We have gray, red and black in the Hamilton area. Which two of the three can mate and produce viable young?
2.Why do we find the red-backed salamander under logs at the floor of cuts or valleys?

Nice area up there; hope you're enjoying it. Well, as the previous poster noted, Redbacks need to keep their skins moist, and so hang out on areas that are least likely to dry out, and also offer shelter from predators and good access to nice, soft-bodied prey.
As for the squirrels, for what it's worth, grey squirrels and red squirrels are different species. Black squirrels are local melanistic color morphs of gray squirrels, and for some reason only seem to form persistent populations near a few college campuses.

Not sure about #1...don't know why they can't all reproduce, but I suppose you are inferring one of those is a sterile hybrid (?)
For #2...you find them in wet, cool microhabitats. Nothing better than under a log to be safe and stay wet during the day (their skin has to stay moist). Also...they should be near water to lay eggs.
