In 1775 the British were expected to march on Concord from Boston, Mass. and capture the colonists' armory there. If they crossed over from Boston by boat (Boston's bay was not partly filled in until years later) there would be two signal lamps in the tower of the Old North Church; if they marched over the neck of land connecting Boston to the mainland there would be one signal lamp. On seeing the signal, Paul Revere, Colonel Prescott, and one other rider whose name I can't recall were to ride through the county of Middlesex to alert the colonial militia, the Minutemen.
Check out Henry Longfellow's poem "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" for details; although not strictly accurate, the language is poetic.
PS "National Treasure" is fiction.

The question was did the British came by land or sea, not what happened in a movie. Paul Revere likely never used the words "one if by land and two if by sea." That is from a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Paul Revere’s Ride. Blondes may be more fun but they also appear to live up to their other cliches. FYI:

The qoute is "One if by land; two if by sea".
It meant that someone would hang one lantern in the tower of the Old North Church if the British were taking the route that went over land, and two if they went by sea. Going by sea was much quicker, and Sam Adams and other patriots would have less time to gather their things and move to a different hiding spot.
National Treasure isn't true, but it's my favorite movie of all time! It has lots of interesting ties to history, even if they're not all 100% accurate.

It was the code that Paul Revere used to annouce to the colonists that the British were coming and it was just for those who were Revolting against the King. In the movie National Treasure--this was not what it really was about. Watch the movie more closely, trust me. I watched in the theaters with my niece (she was mid teens at the time and she asked more deep questions and she knew what it was about)
