Because in all actuality they have nothing to say. Insults and name calling is an escape mechanism used by the ignorant to cover up notable weaknesses in knowledge or courtesy or other social skills to function in society as in character. I wonder if it is also a fear mechanism that is turned on and the defensive front comes in so as not to appear to be vulnerable. If they insult and name call then maybe they feel the other person will back off. But the intelligent know a fear or escape mechanism as a ploy to be exploited for what it is and exposed to true sound thinking instead of name calling and insults which is the work of the ignorant and classless .

Most of the time, when intellect fails, insults are the weapon of choice. Unfortunately, on this site intellect usually fails at the first key stroke.

Because they're ignorant, rude and dim-witted or if they do have a modicum of intelligence their arrogance and pride clearly has more power than their brainpower.

Because they let emotions take over and they don't think as clearly or at all before they speak.
