A very important thing about the core is that there is a liquid outer core and a solid inner core. Sir Harold Jeffreys and Inge Lehmann were able to discover the liquid core because S-waves do NOT travel through liquid. P-waves change velocity as they travel through the liquid core into the solid core. That's how we can infer the core has 2 separate layers.

all of what we know (or infer) about the Earth's core comes from seismic (or Earthquake) data. by studying the speed at which P and S waves travel through the Earth we can see that there must be some material changes ie. the core, and mantle.

We infer the composition to be iron and magnesium rich due to what we know about those elements and the magnetic nature of the Earth.

Good Luck on your paper, Hope you can take what I told you and investigate a little more!
