I guess this depends on what you mean by classic...how old does a novel have to be for you to consider it classic?
Or are you more concerned with quality?
If so, I'd recommend Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage.

All of these are fine novels but if you wish to look at the aspect of loss of innocence you would be hard pressed to find better than ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card. Good luck.
