They act like it's a lifetime entitlement when really there is a MAXIMUM 5 year LIFETIME period you can draw it, Newt & Bill changed that, now some states may have expanded their programs but that's between the populace there and their legislators
How many of you knew that the working poor in many states who it did assist have now run out of the period and are going to food pantry's etc I doubt many of you ever even thought about but prefer to live in your little world where Reagan is still decrying the welfare queen ( which if truth be told was not the inner city black he was hoping the party pictured but southern rural whites since per capita they drew more assistance)

The poor vote so much do they, NOT
People on low incomes are the least likely group to vote, even though the issues they say concern them most -- better job opportunities, affordable health care, access to education -- are actually things politicians can address. In America, the people who are thriving financially -- those who are employed, well-educated, own homes and are married -- are the ones who turn out in droves to vote.

In 2002, 80 percent of families with incomes greater than $75,000 annually voted, compared with just 25 percent of families with incomes less than $10,000, according to the Census Bureau.

Welfare was changed to TANIF long ago and there is a short limit that anyone can receive assistance, and it is mandatory to look for work for most!

Funny, they have never put a limit on corporate welfare, which is also our money! We give the #1 maker of MRE's a $94 MILLION dollar NO-BID contract and who do they hire. Illegals. And THEY doctored their papers.

Anyone with a government contract should be mandated to hire Americans at a decent wage or they don't get the contract! People should also not be allowed to make the obscene profits they are making off of a war! They sure could not do it in WW II!

In my (no jobs, everything work related going over sea's or simply eliminated) state of OHIO. Where you can either deliver newspapers or flip burgers...and if someone dies you may get lucky enough to wash cars. Just think of the benefits!
Anyway, here the LIFETIME MAXIMUM is only (3) years for welfare if you can even qualify that is. I guess after 3 years some magical job will appear and you can suddenly become a republican and get rich!

Boy! I sure would like to know were all these illegals with them high fluting easy big bucks form the system are? May be they should write a book on it..."How to beat the system!" To bad most neo-cons already know this!

I know that was the legislation, but I also know that it is not working that way. There are a lot of people who have found ways to circumvent the system. THEY HAVE TO!

Why? Because the system is designed to punish those who try to improve their situation. For example say that someone is getting AFDC, Rental Assistance, WIC, Energy Assistance, etc. Totaling $2000/month (approx) and they get a job earning $500/month. The system takes away around $1100/month of their entitlement. So they have a net loss of $600. This is not a hypothetical. My brother's neighbor had EXACTLY THAT happen.

How are they circumventing? They are getting diagnosed bi-polar. It is not hard to get a doctor to diagnose it, and they are getting disability instead of welfare.

Sorry, but if you want sympathy in this situation, it will not come from me. The system is busted, and the dems do not want it fixed because if the poor get off of the govt. nipple, they typically become middle class, and if the poor go away, so does the democratic party.

Unfortunately, the dems have been very successful in blocking legislation which would help the poor improve their situation. For example school vouchers.

I'm a "con" and I'm not confused. You must have failed math class if you cannot multiply the "5 years" you speak of by the millions and millions of welfare thieves who steal hard working American tax dollars . There are some who need welfare, and should get it. I am not speaking about that particular group. The group I am speaking about are the ones in the line at the grocery store buying slim jims, beer, and cheez-it's on the taxpayers dime, while they go outside and drive off in their Mercedes. Maybe you don't mind paying for them for 5 years, but normal people do. Think about it.

Why are liberals so confused about welfare.

Clinton established a loop hole for states to continue to pay welfare recipients beyond five years (indefinitely) if they can not find work.

Further, your figures are drastically wrong, per capita use of welfare is astronomically higher in the inner cities, not southern rural cities.

Nice spin though... good try. Next time try to use figures that aren't so easily refuted by even a little research.

My friend, even Howie Dean admitted that Democrats programs did lead to " a culture of dependence" - see the link below. One of those programs was the "bottomless cup O welfare", which Newt fought to change, and Bill went along with after he was told by Dick Morris that he might not get a second term if he didn't fix it.

Well, I completely understand that their are people who are in distress....But I as a middle-class individual who pays for health insurance I am NOT about to ENABLE others to sit on their A*& and not do anything and think they deserve it....Anybody in this country CAN do ANYTHING they want if they put their mind to it.....The only limitations is oneself....Welfare is an ENABLING system......There are plenty of people out their who THINK they deserve everything....w/o working for it...... If you keep giving you ENABLE them to do nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Democrats love to have people depend on them b/c it keeps them in control...when you have people who actually work their butts off and have a successful life they realize how much the democrats are ENABLERS.... by the way, how are the democrats going to pay for all of this? by raising tax on cigarettes? well, quess what some people may stop smoking and if so their won't be as much money as they think and it will , in turn, be in our hands to pay for such a bill.

I bill Medicaid as part of my job. You have no idea what you are talking about...TANF (Temporary Aid for Needy Families) is for 4 years, but many forms of welfare last a lifetime. Get your facts straight before you condemn others please. You sound very very ingnorant and uneducated.

Chuck - if you can't find a job after 3 years, that is VERY sad.

Because people like Rush and Savage keep perpetuating the welfare myths you just addressed. I do find it ironic that the only President to give us actual welfare reform was Bill Clinton, he virtually did away with it, and yet they hate him. It just proves that they don't support an individual and his actions, they merely support a political party.
