peculiar to 'advanced' countries '......or let's just say there's little or no such in third world countries. I mean, sure people still get attacked in third world countries like mine.. but not in such methodical ways ala the fictional Hannibal Lecter... or the very real BTK (he was very methodical), Dahmer, Bundy or that one in Palo Alto (Ramirez) who killed my aunt years ago. I think there are such cases in some European countries, too. Do you think that social pressures in an advanced society has something to do with it? Any thoughts on this one?
Am posting this one in the movies category as there are quiet a few films (Hannibal, for one...and dozens of slasher flicks) were made on such subject.

I am from a third world country...and in one of our trainings, I asked our FBI lecturers the same question, he agreed and said he was puzzled too. I hope I can get some thoughts on the subject from other sources..like your thoughts for instance

The lecture was about profiling serial killers. Don't get me wrong here guys. Nothing racial of whatever sort here. Just a question. A question my FBI lecturer had no answer to

Kaija and Flower Lady. Very interesting theories you have there. I really appreciate that. I would like to add also that we don't have psychologists here in our small communities. Why? They would run out of business. Nobody seems to need professional ones. Of course, there are those who manifest certain abnormal behaviours...but friends and family would then intervene. I think that's one factor.

Ya' wanna know why? Here's one of my theories. In third world countries, most people are so busy just trying to survive, they don't have time to waste being obsessed with their own egos/self absorption. Also, in third world countries they usually have small tightly knit communities and would a) know who the killer is; b)not tolerate that type of behavior; c)would dispose of him/her/it in their own way, depending on how involved the local law enforcement is with that community. I have heard of at least one serial killer in Mexico or perhaps a Central American country though.
Another point is that while there may be much mental retardation due to incomplete nutrition in third world countries, the level of mental illnesses is most likely lower, again, I believe, because if you are busy just trying to find food and shelter for your children as well as yourself, your behavior is directed toward that and again, not directed inward toward your own self. Also, your learned behavior from your parents would be one of survival and not of addictive behavior such as drinking, drug abuse, anti-social behavior. Your social behavior would relate directly to your survival in your community since it usually would be smaller in a third world country as opposed to say, Los Angeles or New York. Not only that, but in a third world country, you would not constantly be bombarded with media-no slasher movies, no perverted sex in film or music, no horror or paranormal books, no Internet telling you how to make a nuclear bomb, any of that fun stuff. Also, in large, advanced societies, it is easier to lose that sense of self and community afforded to tiny communities in third world countries where there would be little isolation and no inward absorption. Still more, violence against animals would be more accepted in a 3rd world country because it is a means of survival (food) and not as taboo and forbidden as it is in more advanced cultures. Therefore, when you read that serials usually start by killing small animals before they graduate to humans, they are probably getting a thrill by performing a forbidden act as well as relating to man's earlier times when violence many times meant, again, survival either via warlike behavior to fight off invaders or killing animals for food. Too much progress as well as too little progress are formulas for disaster. All world societies need to
look at their progress speeds and seriously think about what should be advanced and what should not.

Interesting question..
It would be hard to put a finger on it.. many studies indicate that serotonin level has some effect.. Serotonin controls your "conscience" .. basically it's the thing in your head that makes you think twice.. makes you think about possible outcomes.. Having a low level of it, or even worse an erratic level.. (goes up or down for apparently no reason) makes it so that doesn't even enter your mind.. In my own opinion this is probably due to many different factors, from pollution, to chemicals in food products, and due to stresses at some other point in life that caused the brain to "decide" that was a harmful outlook.. (In your formative years, living with a parent who forced you to accept these things as normal.. or whatever)
Note for the record.. I have no idea how to spell seratonin.. I used spell check and it changed it when I did it.. but then went back to saying it was wrong when I went to resume it.. and it then wouldn't come up with a word even close..
This is not counting people who kill for reasons of ethics, or politics really..These people are sort of the reverse, they believe they are right and just, and that the end justifies the means. This is more about people who really can't say why they did it.. people who seemingly had no signs before hand.. Who just reacted to some spark in their own head... (even if it was planned out before hand.. there is some idea that comes in that says.. "do this")

the concern with third international worldwide places is the communication structures, the two between regulation enforcement businesses and with the media. In western worldwide places, serial killings are sensationalized and blasted everywhere in the media. In third international worldwide places, all and sundry is too nerve-racking approximately how they'll consume, or in spite of the fact that if or no longer they're going to be killed by TB, or malaria, etc. to get labored up over a serial killer. to no longer point out the police are A. plenty extra brutal and much less limited in handling criminals, B. extra corrupt and C. much less nicely knowledgeable to handle or maybe understand serial killers. A serial killer ought to lots extra fairly do in spite of the fact that he needed in a third international u . s . than a sophisticated u . s ., via fact the forensic technologies is purely no longer available to unravel a sequence of crimes of that type, or maybe to link them at the same time.

May i ask what third world country are you from?
There are serial killers all around the world,i just believe that in "advanced" countries that stuff gets more attention, especially in media.Less wealthy states got a whole lot of headaches besides murders, plus media is controlled by the government
For ex,that's what happened back home in Russia and it was not talked about until later

Could be.
One other thing that comes to mind is the amount of leisure time people from 'advanced' countries have.
While those in 'third-world' countries are harvesting crops, hauling water from a well, chopping wood, etc.- there really isn't time for psychosis to 'ferment'.
Those in advanced countries may have more time to dwell on anti-social thoughts, which may develop into anti-social behavior.
Just a thought. :)

We don't know whether your hypothesis is correct. Certainly in Iraq we have mass murders. As for people who kill several people one at a time, your perception might just be due to better information in advanced countries. It takes advanced forensics to link murders, and most countries could not do that and would not know that there is a mass murderer on the loose. It also takes a free press to publicize the finding; some countries might not let that information out.

who says that it doesn't happen in those countries?? maybe the police just don't put two and two together to figure out it was done by the same person. i dont believe that this is limited to "advanced" countries

I think in third-world countries, "serial killers" are just called "cannibals" or "headhunters" or "naked savages".
