Many people find it difficult, & for various reasons.
I'd like to begin by saying that it isn't necessary to have had the same experience to be able to deal with it. For example, I'm not, & have never been a psychotic, but I can transact with psychotics. Nor have I been depressed, yet I often deal with deeply depressed people. One might say it's my profession, but it would also have to be my nature. Which came first?
Some people are so highly sensitive, depression impacts them negatively. Others feel awkward & simply don't know "how" to communicate. Then, there are others with latent depression & being around depressed people confirms, or "brings this out" in them. The well grounded, & empathic won't have any difficulty. But they must also be aware that while they care, there are two very important things: Don't get so deeply absorbed that it's draining; keep a thread of distance for yourself; also be aware when the depressed person has no desire, or cannot communicate. THEY can be overwhelmed by someone too eager to "help." There are many aspects to this, but I think this is enough for here?
Edit: LORD Z, above me, gave an excellent answer. However, I didn't feel from your question that you were speaking of deeply, clinically depressed people--who should be dealt with only by professonals, or I would have answered rather differently.
Edit: I must take umbrage with what seems to be "textbook" quotes? There are many degrees of depression: All are psychological ( not pshycic [sic] & while I feel the answer was intended to help, professionally, it is not credible.

Depression...Excellent Question.
"Why Would Someone Have Difficultly Speaking With Depressed People? "
According to the biogenic Amine therapy..There is a deficiency in the momo amines
Do you know the mean of depression really ?cause if you have knew it,I am sure that you will never ask this question
Depression is not of a pshycic cause as most people imagine or think although may be the trigerring action some thing depressing
In other words..Those depressed people..their brains can't balance between seretonin and norepinephrine..Of course that means that the patient either genetically was born like that or he did have a trauma..(for example..His head was hitten in an accident)..So the balance is disturbed
Depression means:"Clinical depression (also called major depressive disorder, or unipolar depression when compared to bipolar disorder) is a state of intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and/or activities of daily living."
Do you see that this person can be talked to...Of course this person has delusions..and has a strange background
May be you can see them talking to themselves or crying alot or enter a sadness or so silent that you can feel them death..
Sometimes you can feel them anxious
Depression signs and symptoms
1)Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
2)Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
3)Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
4)Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
5)Decreased energy, fatigue, being “slowed down”
6)Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
7)Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
8)Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
9)Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
10)Restlessness, irritability
11)Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
SOMETIMES you can find manic deprerssive patients..The patient have mania attacks and depressive attacks..
The depressive attacks Signs and symptoms are were
mentioned ..then the Mania Signs ans Symptoms:
1)Abnormal or excessive elation
2)Unusual irritability
3)Decreased need for sleep
4)Grandiose notions
5)Increased talking
6)Racing thoughts
7)Increased sexual desire
8)Markedly increased energy
9)Poor judgment
10)Inappropriate social behavior
The treatment Strategy..Acoording to the case and its severity..But we must consider to lower the incidence to get the Adverse Effects..Cause the adverse effects is in the all classes in treatment depression.alot
1) seretonin/norepinepthrine reuptake..(SNRI..ex citalopram)
2)Selective Seretonin Reuptake..(SSRI..ex..Venlaflaxine)
3)Atypical Anti-depressants.(ex Bupropian)
4) Mono maine oxidase inhibitors..(MAOIs..ex phenelzine)
5) Tri cyclicAnti-depressants..(TCAs)..
(There is the secondary and tertiary amines classes in the TCAs..Ex for the 2ndry is Desipramine and an ex for the tertiary is Amitriptyline..TCAs Was the mostly used. But due to its numerous sid effects..Now it is the last choice)
These are the classes of drugs but to know generally..The mechanis of action
All drugs cause the down regulation of the presynaptic inhibitory nerves permits the Biosynthesis and release of theNeurotransimmters..in to the synaptic cleft.. and enhanced signaling in the post synaptic neurons presumably leading to a therapeutic response
Thanks for the question..It is so interesting
I wish that i answered your question and hitted your point as possible

Depression and anxiety are two sides of the smae coin and deprending on what you say to a depressed person you may trigger an anxiety attack, or if the depression grows too severe thoughts of suicide may become a realistic problem.
It is like walking on egg shells, if you step too hard on the wrong nerve you might casuse the person to explode and either hurt themselves or hurt others.
It is definitely a good time to be a good listener, to not ask questions that don't need answering, and not offer advice without first considering where that advice will lead one.
It need not overwhelm a person but it should get their undivided attention.
Some people are either unwilling or incapable of giving this type of undivided attention, they may or may not recognize the peril of their folly and choose not to risk it.

Depressed people are generally hard to deal with because they are confining themselves to their own inner world of misery and refuse to accept much from people who try to help them.
They believe that they are omniscient in what they're experiencing, assuming that they'll probably never be able to get out of their situation. They think everything is pretty much over, and label the things we say as "useless". This makes it difficult to speak with depressed people.
I often drove my boyfriend nuts because I would suddenly start mumbling a chain of depressing things, and however he tried to help me feel better, I only became worse from not being able to accept the good things he was saying.

Maybe they're afraid they will say the wrong thing and cause the person to do something to hurt themselves or someone else.
