She stole my husband's pain pills and the money out of the jar that we were saving for my daughter's Christmas present.
What do I do?

It sounds like she has a substance abuse problem. It is unlikely she has the means to repay you, and is probably so deep in addiction that she can't control herself. First, make absolute CERTAIN that that is all she took from the house. Make sure she didn't take any credit cards or information that could allow her to steal your identity. The rest is up to you, that is, whether or not you want to call the police, file a report, and have her arrested. If you decide not to do that, than at least make sure she does not have a key to your house, and do not under any circumstance let her back in to stay with you. Also, keep her away from your children. Remember, she is sick and it is up to her to get help.

Obviously the sentiment that you should call the cops has been mentioned. But you don't seem to want to go that way. So, instead make absolutely certain there isn't some other explanation. I don't know if you caught her, or what, but make sure the items didn't just get moved and you didn't notice. Once you are sure it was her, tell her that you know she took those items and that she is never welcome in your home again. Ask her to return the stuff, and if she won't then you can still report the theft if you want. But do not threaten to call the police unless you really will. Because if you threaten and don't follow up, she'll just learn that she can get away with it.

That's pretty messed up. You should call her and try to find out why she did it.
