dont get me started because I would tax fast food. Any of the pure high fructose corn syrup drinks. Man I think I have some fascist tendancies. But really the stuff is poison. Do you honestly believe that your pancreas was designed for high fructose corn syrup? Do you believe that crap was ever tested in its completeness on human beings? I mean basically the entire american lifestyle. Just like the drug companies test thier stuff on completely healthy 20 and 30 somethings with no other medical problems then give it to the entire population. IDK ok I vented a little. But I do think we are poisoning ourselves. Look at american genetics theres no reason we shouldnt live as long as the current Europeans do.

Of course it's to raise money. Especially now that cigarette smokers are a minority voting for the tax increase wins more votes than it loses. Laws of supply and demand do apply. Maybe some smokers will be taxed into quitting. Because there really is a health care cost to people smoking, some decreased expenses might counterbalance the decreased revenue. It also makes it safer to raise the taxes even more on the smokers who continue to smoke anyway. They sort of proved that when you paid $8 for more cigarettes instead of quitting after it exceeded $5. However increased smuggling can be a consequence of trying to squeeze more taxes out of smokers.

Aside from cigarettes, soda, and junkfood there are many things to tax for that are unhealthful;examples--those medicines who could destroy our liver and other internal organs, if our intake is higher than what is prescribed by the doctor, same with alcohol and other beverages that could also damage our internal organs.

What about alcohol. The drinking problem is causing more deaths than cigarettes especially of younger people. soda and junk food obesity is out of control in america again causing more deaths and medical problems. also costing taxpayers more money in health care. Here is another suggestion. People on welfare should not get income tax returns. yes they do I actually no a woman who has 6 kids the family is on welfare the husband wont get a job she works sporadically yet she gets the child earned income every year in her tax return. Take that money and pay back what she has gotten from welfare, food stamps and medicaid

The bad thing about taxing cigarettes is the fact that the majority of smokers are poor. So now they want to tax the poor...again so they can help them? Makes sense to me.

And not only that, it would help people that make up to 83 thousand a year.

Well if it would mean that U.S. citizens did't have to pay taxes, I would say to tax George Bush, he is unhealthy and just as harmful as cigarettes or perhaps even worse.

Cigarettes and junk food are NOT the same. If you have ever seen someone with a hole in their throat or a black lung you would KNOW that.
