The median price of a home in California is $645,000.
Now is a buyer's market.
Check out Corona, Fontana.
In the north, check out Stockton, Merced.
Talk to a real estate broker, preferably a friend.
As a successful real estate investor, I can tell you that this is a great time to buy a home in the RIGHT area. I am currently investing in over 100 homes.

I believe that real estate around L.A. is still overpriced. If you can afford to stay for at least 5 years and you need to live in L.A. for your job it's possible that buying a home is a good decision. But if you could move and make a good life, I would go elsewhere. That is not much house for $765K, and if you have children you will find that two bedrooms is not enough.

no I wouldn't. I moved away from California 5 years ago and I was able to buy a house right off the bat in my new state. I don't think there is a quality of life in California anymore. there are too many people crammed in to too little land mass, and it is just too expensive with little quality of life. I remember all the cool events going on in the Bay Area, but I'd never go to them because it meant taking 3 different highways and taking my life in my hands just to get there. No regrets about moving!

Idaho has had the fastest growing economy for the last 3 years. I have investors buying homes like crazy and they all rent in Cali. 2000 sq/ft New Home is $190,000.

There are a lots of 2 bedroom houses priced in the mid $700K s in Southern California. Your neighborhood may just be overpriced. So, I wouldn't move so fast. You are welcome to request sample listings by e-mail.
