An addendum is an addition to a legal document. An example is the legal document describing a condominium association. If the Condo is enlarged, an addendum is added to the legal description.

Addendums are any thing that are added to the construction documents.
Usually these are provided prior to the bid date. Often times when projects are let out for bid the plans may not be complete or the specifications may reference materials that are unavailable or unclear.
The different bidders will submit Request For Information to the Owner and the Architect and Engineer will answer these questions. Sometimes the questions will reveal an issue that requires a change to the plans or specs.
When this happens revised plan sheets or spec sections will be sent to all of the bidders and this is an addendum. So an addendum is a revision to the project plans or specifications.
If the addendum comes out before the bid the costs will be included in the bid. However if an addendum comes out after the bid or during construction (sometimes these are called Instructional Bulletins) then there may be additional costs that will have to be agreed to.
The contractor will submit their costs for the changes to the owner and then they will negotiate an agreement for the work.
Sometimes these can result in a reduction in the cost of project if work is deleted.
Just remember Scope = Dollars, Dollars = Scope.
If you want to add scope (work) to the project it will cost more money. If you want to save moeny on the project you have to take away some of the scope.

An addendum, literally, is anything added. That is, added to anything. Most commonly the word is associated with the law and is used when referring to an addition to a legal document or a book. An addendum to a legal document will alter or add to the terms and is often simply stapled in back of the original document after execution. An addendum to a book may serve to update it, as with a book of statutes. Dealing specifically with construction, an addendum may alter the terms of the construction contract or update the blueprints, etc.

An Addendum is a change to a contract. Perhaps there were some changes to the original contract. The Addendum must be signed by both parties in the same way as the original contract was signed to make it valid.

Theoretically or reality? An addendum now is a way to get extra money siphoned to somewhere attached to another bill. A highway bill designating 50 million dollars to a bridge will have an addendum sending ten million dollars to the senators wifes study of laundry cleansers. It is the way our govt. works in the real world.

It's an add on to what the customer originally agreed to. After the blue print is made for construction instructions, an add on is commonly called an "as built". This helps future owners and construction contractors in repairs and new construction projects.
