Females tend to be larger and wider than the males. Males tend to have narrower bodies.

Also males have white dots on their gill covers when they are old enough to breed. They look sort of like pimples, and are called tubercles.

Of course comets are goldfish with long fins... same genetics. Here's a link with photos that will helphttp://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm:

You will need to wait until your fish are at least a year old, and in spawning condition. Males will get white pimple-like bumps (tubercles) on the gill covers and along the front edges of their fins. There's also a difference in the shape of the vent (anus). See this link for photos of what you should look for: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

copperhead hit the nail on the head, im with them, ive been breeding gold fish now for over 20 years and thats one way of sexing them, the other way if you cant see the pimples is to hold the fish in your left hand ( still in the water) and gently rub with you index finger and thumb each side of the belly toward its vent(bum) and if you see like a white milk come out its a male, dont sqeeze to hard,,,,,,,
hope this helps
