It is legit and the con has since corrected himself, but just to prove how thorough I am, here is the quote straight from the handwritten letter he wrote and that is stored in the Library of Congress.

The last three lines of this page say:
"is a politic measure and a practicable one. Another means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions or property in"

The first line of this next page says:

While Jefferson may have said that, he also points out the exact core value of a liberal. "Fixing" inequality = asset redistribution via the government. That is socialist by nature. If I work hard and get somewhere in life, then keep your liberal hands off of my wallet. I shoild have the right to not be robbed to support social entitlement programs libs want to fund WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY.

America was built on free enterprise, working hard to succeed, and being able to retain what you had earned...NOT having it taken away by so called "do gooders" who won't pay for the programs they want with THEIR OWN MONEY !

I agree that the letter says what you claim. there can be no doubt. I dont know why anyone would question what is in the letter. However, Thomas Jefferson wrote alot in his life, like the following;
"God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever." Thomas Jefferson.

I am sure that somewould question this quote as well, but it doesnt make it any less valid...

Well, too many continue even in the face of proof continue to belive Jefferson was Christian when he himself stated often what he was and what he belived.

Often its either the libs or the fundie's who continue to rewrite history to suit their own views.

what's your point ? is jefferson an infallible god? since when do you libs believe in the constitution? you've done nothing but twist it into a mockery, so don't cherry pick quotes from our founding fathers.as for the rest of you bandying about the word neo-con, you know that's a term for liberal?

Jefferson is one of the true heroes of our American system of democracy. Among the founding fathers, he was perhaps the best writer, if not the best thinker. So everyone who has some idea about how our country should run looks to Jefferson to back him up. By carefully picking a sentence or two, you can get Jefferson to support whatever you want him to support, just as you can get the Bible to support slavery and genocide.

Many Americans (and especially neo-cons) don't really have that deep an understanding of the ideas of our founding fathers. Politicians and religious leaders twist their words, and people who haven't studied Jefferson's writings for themselves are easily misled into thinking, for instance, that our founding fathers meant the US to be a theocracy. Or a country where racial minorities had second-class citizenship. Or that corporations were meant to have the almost unlimited power they have today.

Yet when someone says something like this, and you challenge them, they get defensive! 8^)

What I cannot believe is that you engage in the post hoc ergo propter hoc single variable method of analysis.

It could be from Jesus himself. If it doesn't agree with what Bush / Rush tell them to believe, they will argue about nothing for eternity.

No. It must be a moderate con to have the cognitive ability and spine to question the majority party. Maybe he can be turned from the dark side.

Most conservatives are on the lower slope of a steep social learning curve. Sometimes we must forgive them and hope they learn at a good pace.

Your questions have served them well this evening!
