I was twelve when an elderly man in my neighborhood offered me the skull of a monkey. It had a been a pet forty years earlier and when it died he buried it in his back yard, but when it was time to move he could'nt bear to abandon the pet's grave altogether so he disinterred it and took the skull, boiled it for sanitary purposes and kept it on his mantle. He gave it to me because he was basically dying and he just thought it might as well belong to somebody and who would value such a thing more than a 12-year-old boy? I still have it,by the way. It sits in my home office, and over the years it's become a bit of a friend. I call him Waldo.

My mother sculpts animals by hand out of clay and then paints them. She has given me various critters, since I was little. Those are always the best.

A loaf of whole grain rye bread. It's very deep to give bread to people, I find. It somehow moves them, and I've since taken to bringing self-baked bread as a gift anywhere I go.

I have never received any handmade presents except from my mother. And they were unique, and I wore them threadbare.
