In my opinion I believe that people are not happy because of the way they think. It sounds cheesy but it's true. I mean sure, your life can be bad but you can look past that and at least find something to be happy about. And there are always those people who have so many things but just keep wanting more.
There have been some horrible events in my life, especially this past year, and I cry about it but I also find somehting to smile about and be happy. You have to have a good outlook on life to be happy, and there is no other way to live.

For some, it is a learned helplessness. For others, it is to get attention. For still others, it is a sense of boredom and/or a longing for some unknown thing they can't quite put their finger on. There are many reasons. Some people feel unhappy because they feel they can't get close to anyone. This is not a general question, because the answer will vary from person to person. There are generalities, of course, as described above, but the answer will vary, depending on who you ask.

Human mind is dual in concepts. To try to attain happiness involves the concept, I am not happy now. When the happiness is experienced it becomes obvious that it cannot last. When the happiness has past, what is left?

I think it is a learned attitude that can be changed. What is happiness anyway? Some one who goes around grinning or someone who donates ten dollars to the food bank?

Mostly lack of money.
Money can buy ALMOST anything!
Assuming you are a "normal" person, money can buy you happiness.
If you are not normal, money will never make you happy, but you will at least be able to afford a shrink!
