because they were developed back in the old days they were legends passed down from generation to generation as a form of entertainment for children and even some adults

Folktales are characteristically anonymous, timeless, and placeless "tales" circulated orally among a people (folks)

Before they were referred to as 'folktales' they were known as 'Ramblings of the masses,' which doesn't quite roll off the tongue as well. JK
