Subtract 3y from both sides:
x = 7x

Now subtract x from both sides:
0 = 6x

Divide both sides by 6
x = 0

Intuitively you should see that you have x added to something and 7x added to something. That leads you to figure out that x = 7x. The only way something can equal 7 times itself is if x is zero.

A common mistake would be to try to divide both sides by x which will result in 1 = 7, but the error is that x = 0 and you should never divide by zero.

x+3y=7x+3y= 7-3=4+3y=12

x=7x+3y-3y Move 3y from right to left
x=7x
0=6x Move x over to left
x=0 Solve for x

the answer is zero....it's kind of intuitive but if you want to see the algebra:

x+3y = 7x + 3y
combine like terms and you get:

3y -3y = 7x -x....which gives you

0 = 6x

solve for x and you get 0.

Take away the 3y on both sides. That will leave you with
x = 7x

The only way that a number can equal 7 times itself, is for the number to be zero.

isolate your variables. get you're y's on one side and x's on the other. subtract the 3y from the left side. do the same to the right. you are left with x = 7x. subtract the x from both sides. you are left with 0 = 6x. x has to = 0

X = 0

Remove the common from both sides (3y)

you end up with x=7x

X= 0

you get the x's alone by subtracting the 3y and subtracting the 7x so that it would be -6x=0, because the ys cancel out

x + 3y = 7x + 3y
x + 3y - 3y = 7x + 3y - 3y
x = 7x
x - x = 7x - (1)x
0 = 6x
0/6 = 6x/6
0 = x
x = 0

x+3y=yx+3y
subtract 3y from both sides, you're left with x=7x, which is definitely not true. so x=undefined, or x=0
