Troy existed since the Bronze Age;
Brian Rose of Cincinnati University is still excavating there.
The first evidence of Troy was found by Schliemann at the end of XIXth century; excavations in the last century have found evidence of "at least" seven towns destroyed and rebuilt on that place (Hissarlik Turkey).
All those wars had just one justification : the people who controlled that area could also control all the commerce between eastern countries and Greece (which represented the civilised world).

Politics. Troy controlled a major trade route; all ships that passed through had to pay a "toll" to King Priam. Agamemnon wanted to conquer Troy to gain this power. The whole Helen thing was just a front to make his attack seem righteous.

Here's an interesting negative. If there had been a war on the scale of Homer's description there should be literally tons of broken artifacts and at least some large amount of skeletal remains. Troy was "found" years ago, but there are few swords, shields or spears written of.
