Need to know if my partner will need to obtain a VISA before coming to America for a holiday? He is staying about 90 but can go to Canada and back if he has to.

As stated above, check with the US Embassy
http://usembassy-australia.state.gov/consular/visas/index.html

or US Department of Customs and Border Protection
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/visitors_us/vwp/
about eligibility under the Visa Waiver Program.

Going to Canada and back will not necessarily extend your partner's stay in the US. Read carefully the requirements.

Per the State Department about the VWP:

If I travel to Canada or Mexico, can I re-enter the U.S on the VWP, and if so does the 90 days then start again?
VWP travelers who have been admitted to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program and who make a short trip to Canada, Mexico or an adjacent island generally can be readmitted to the U.S. under the VWP for the original admission period. They do not, however, get a new 90 day admission period.

By partner you mean boyfriend.

If your boyfriend is staying for less then 90 days and holds a valid Australian passport then he may be eligible to travel visa-free under the visa waiver program providing he can meet all of the other the requirements set forth by the U.S. State which are detailed on the website below.

http://usembassy-australia.state.gov/consular/visawaiver.html

If he is not sure if he is eligible then use the visa waiver wizard below.

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/visa_wizard.html

If he is not eligible then he must apply for a B-2 tourist visa the details on how to do this are outlined below

No danger! there is a lot of hoops to bounce via earlier that occurs. For my spouse i'm observing $2000 for the important different visa utility on my own and a likely 8 month wait until in would or won't be authorized. vacationer visa may be the quickest thank you to bypass. Ozmaniac will fill you in. P.S. we've been married particularly much 10 years yet meaning squat.

The correct way to work this out does not involve Yahoo Answers :-)

I would suggest http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/temp_1305.html

It appears that Australia participates in the Visa waiver programme, and that a US visa might not be needed if your partner is an Australian citizen, but he or she should probably read that Web page carefully, and also perhaps check with the travel agent. You can also call your local US embassy.
