Use the inverse operation. Since 2 and x are linked together by multiplication you can separate them be dividing.

Divide both sides of the equation by 2. that will give you

2x/2=7/2 On the left side the 2's cancel out (actually 2/2
is equal to 1 but any number multiplied by 1 stays
the same and so the 1 can be dropped
1*x = x

x = 3 1/2 or 3.5

Did that help?

In a word problem this would be "2 times what=7"
Think of the x as being a question mark or unknown quantity.
It is permitted to 'do something' to BOTH SIDES sides of an equation, to keep 'balance'. (Like a teeter totter)
1=1, 1+1=1+1............ 2=2,2*3=2*3.............6=6, 6/2=6/2

2x=7
divide both sides by 2 (To get x by itself, Alone)
2x/2=7/2
x=7/2
x=3 + 1/2
We could have also multiplied both sides by 1/2 (Same result)
Hope this helps you to understand a little better

From (2x - 7)(x + 4) = 0, we get two possibilities, (2x - 7) = 0 and (x + 4) = 0 x = 7/2 or x = -4

2x=7
divide 2 from both sides
x=7/2

or

x= 3 1/2

2X=7 Just divide both sides by 2 to remove the 2 from the X

x=7/2 or x=3.5

When you see 2 and x beside each other it means you must get x by itself like this:

x = ?

So you would move 2 to the other side and stick it under 7 like this:

x = 7/2

7 divided by 2 is 3.5 so:

x = 3.5

x's value is 3.5. or as a fraction 3 1/2.
