I am guessing that you are too young to actually remember the 1980s. While you are right that perhaps social worry was less then and people were less worried to let their children "play out", the dangers that are so "prevalent" now were still there but the anxiety about them was not. The numbers of children abducted and otherwise abused were similar. Nuclear war was a real and very frightening threat throughout the 1980s and essential to understanding the decade is the understanding of the very palpable terror of global and entire destruction being very possible and very probable. Social unrest was great with strikes and rioting affecting most European countries (America missed out on this by having a very strong and stable political world at the time - probably in part due to the fear of war mentioned above). Social inequity was greater than it is now, people that were born poor tended to stay that way and those born wealthy also tended to stay that way. There are things to "miss" the 1980s for; the innocence - people did not have extreme fears of contagions, allergens etc. (we do now, most people have adopted allergies of some kind and most people have unreasonable and terrific fears of contamination and contagions to the point of using sanitizer almost constantly) - people were not as obsessed with the behaviour of other people and were certainly not as easily morally outraged as they are now - people were less controlled by ridiculous laws and prohibitions (the use of public disorder, anti-terror and racial / sexual abuse laws to constrict and control people has never been greater now) - people ate, smoked and drank with greater abandon (not because they did not know the risks but because they did and knew when to stop). I think that yes people were happier perhaps but I am not sure that the glorious and shiny image that we have now (especially those that were not sentient or even alive then) of the 80s is more than a brittle fantasy and a reflection of how unhappy a great deal of people are now.

Well, everything was a lot more fun in the 60's and the 70's,a period to which our times would virtually pale by comparison. I can get nostalgic about the 80s and 90s because that's when I was a teenager and a young man,but I know through any number of sources that the last two complete decades were a complete drag by comparison with the preceding two.

I never get to answer the good questions first. Galahad has it on the dot....man the 60's & 70's must have rocked! I was born in 73 so I missed all of that....Imagine the freedom back then.... :) And by the way Darth Mauls' answer is awesome also! I'm an 80's & 90's fanatic......man does it suck today! We have to put up with all sorts of crazy laws that are totally unecessary. Not to mention the crappy music!

Your write the 80's and 90's were sooo much better wresting was a little more about wrestling. Younger kids could watch without seeing puppies all the time. even the story lines were better. when i was younger i would go to the video store just to rent the old wresting videos.
